WSA North Stars take 2013 MSA Cup

North Stars defeat Express 5 - 0

September 9, 2013

The WSA North Stars are once again returning to the national stage representing Manitoba at the Senior Women’s Club Nationals this fall in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  The competition for the Jubilee Trophy will take place October 9th to 14th

The August 24 championship game between the WSA North Stars and the Express could not have taken place on a better night.  Temperature, wind and humidity were all perfect for the senior women’s showdown.

The game started out with both teams struggling to get the nerves out of the way.  Play was “scrambley” as each team had some chances, but little ball control or sustained possession.  After about ten minutes the game settled in and the North Stars began to show what they are good at… controlling the play by holding the ball.

The North Stars continued to press the attack from all areas of the field until Brooklyn Dyce scored a highlight reel header off a corner from Taeva Pathammavong in the 24th minute.  Just two minutes later Miskimmin just missed a glorious chance by pounding one off the woodwork from a beautiful feed from Laura Locke.  The North Stars had now found their game and were attacking from the left, right and down the middle.

The second goal was the result of another set piece as Laura Locke pounced on the rebound given up by the Express goalie from a sizzling free kick taken by Brooklyn Dyce in the 27th minute.  The North Stars were now in cruise mode and had several excellent chance. However it was not until the 48th minute when Kennadie Chaudhary stole the ball at mid-field and weaved her way to the top of the box before ripping a low shot perfectly into the bottom corner of the net to end the first half of the game.

The second half of the game continued as the first half ended with the North Stars pressing the play.  The Express never gave up and worked hard from the start to the finish, but could not match the North Stars in ball control and chances.  The second half scoring was rounded out with Kennadie Chaudhary getting her second goal and Caley Miskimmin potting her first of the game.

This will be the WSA North Stars third appearance in the last four years at the Jubilee Cup and the team this year promises to be one of the strongest.  We have strength in all areas of the field said coach William Rosales.  Paula Fast and Dana Baker anchor the defense squad at the center back position.  They are both very strong shutdown-type players and combining them with speed and finesse of Taeva Pathammavong and Carrie Nash on the outside gives out defensive squad a dynamic that will be hard to beat.

Medal_Presentation.pngUp front the team this year has added solid veteran experience with Laura Locke and Karli Kolpitts.  Laura and Karli’s exceptional skill and experience really compliment the blinding speed and power of longtime North Star Caley Miskimmin.  We can score from anywhere now said Coach Rosales.  Opponents will find it difficult to defend as all three strikers can score when given the chance.

The North Star midfield is as strong as it has ever been with the key additions of Alison Kastner, Brooklyn Dyce and youngster Kennadie Chaudhary.  Kastner and Dyce have just completed outstanding university careers and Kennadie is super talent that has not yet started her university play.

As the team makes preparations for the trip to Halifax there will be several fund raising events.  Keep an eye on this web site for a chance to support the team as they get ready to do us proud on the east coast!
